More information:
- The YF-21 is a prototype variable fighter developed by General Galaxy, for U.N. Spacy's Advanced Variable Fighter initiative under Project Super Nova. It was featured in the OVA Macross Plus and movie Macross Plus Movie Edition. Known pilots for this variable fighter are Guld Goa Bowman and it was designated Omega One.
- It ultimately lost to the YF-19 in its bet to become U.N. Spacy's main variable fighter model; although noting the YF-21's stealth capabilities and generally impressive performace, U.N. Spacy did adopt it as the limited-production VF-22 Sturmvogel II by 2042, often piloted by ace pilots, which appeared in Macross 7.
- Armament - 1x Howard PBS-03F fighter-carried Pin-Point Barrier system: The Pin-Point Barrier system sheathed portions of the variable fighter in an energy barrier that could move across the hull. It could be used like shields to intercept and defeat incoming fire or to enhance punches for physical combat. Due to engine output restrictions, the Pin-Point Barrier can only be used in Battroid mode.
- Armament - 1x Erlikon AAB-7(.5) super-miniature anti-aircraft laser turret: A laser turret mounted in the center dorsal section in Fighter and GERWALK modes, it becomes a head turret in Battroid mode.
- Armament - 2x Mauler REB-22 laser beam guns: One laser beam gun is mounted between the rear thrusters and tail stabilizers on both sides of the Fighter mode, for a total of two. They have barrels facing the front and back of the fighter. In Battroid and GERWALK modes they are mounted on the lower arms.
- Armament - 2x Howard/General GV-17L Stealth Gun Pods: Two cartridge-less Gatling Gun Pods featuring retractable grip/stealth covers. They are mounted on the underside of the fuselage in Fighter mode. In Battroid and GERWALK modes, they can be used as handheld weapons or stored on the leg bay cover panels.
- Armament - 2x arm shields: The YF-21 features tail stabilizers in Fighter mode that can angle inward for high speed configuration. In Battroid and GERWALK modes, they are mounted on both arms and become defensive shields that work in concert with the Pin-Point Barrier system.
- Armament - 1x Howard PBS-03F fighter-carried Pin-Point Barrier system: The Pin-Point Barrier system sheathed portions of the variable fighter in an energy barrier that could move across the hull. It could
- Bombs & Missiles - 4x Bifors BML-02S rapid-fire micro-missile launchers: Four micro-missile launchers mounted in the central dorsal section of Fighter mode and on the back in Battroid mode.
- Optional Equipment - 4x FAST Pack micro-missile weapon hardpoints: Four FAST Pack hardpoints are located on the YF-21: two mounted under the ventral fuselage in Fighter mode/side leg panels in GERWALK/Battroid modes; and two mounted on the tail stabilizers in Fighter mode/on the arm shields in GERWALK/Battroid modes.
- Optional Equipment - 1x hardpoint for Shinnakasu Industry/OTEC FBF-1000A Fold Booster: One hardpoint is located on the top of the Fighter mode for mounting a one-use Fold Booster. Not certified for performing folds beyond a one-way limit of 20 light years. It was normally ejected after use.
